Hand Identity Chart

The Knowles Teacher Initiative Hand Identity Activity is a reflective tool, adapted from Facing History and Ourselves, that helps educators explore how identity might shape collaboration. Each teacher traces their hand (or uses a drawing) to represent themself. Inside the hand, they record the labels and descriptions they use for themself. On the outside, they record labels and descriptions they believe others would use.
After completing the chart, teachers can reflect on the overlap and differences between the two sets of descriptors, considering where these perceptions come from and how they might affect how they are received in professional spaces. They also reflect on how students might respond to similar differences, with implications for building classroom community.
As an extension, this activity can be used in groups. Facilitators can invite group members to complete a hand chart, then guide partner and whole-group discussions. Group members reflect on how identity influences belonging, visibility, and interactions, share insights, and notice perspectives that may be overlooked.
This activity builds awareness of personal and professional identity, encourages reflection on assumptions, and can be used with teachers, students, or colleagues to surface group patterns that shape collaboration and community.
