Knowles Teaching Fellows Program Supports Early-Career Mathematics and Science Teachers

Moorestown, N.J., July 17, 2017 – The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation announced the members of its 2017 Cohort of Teaching Fellows. The 2017 Cohort is made up of 37 early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers, including 28 advanced degrees holders, three AmeriCorps alumni, one Upward Bound instructor, one returned Peace Corps volunteer, one National Park Service Park Ranger and one professional basketball player.

The Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is a comprehensive, five-year program that supports beginning mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom. Through the program, Knowles Fellows have access to grants for expenses associated with purchasing classroom materials, engaging in professional development, and spearheading leadership activities that have an impact beyond their own classrooms. Fellows also benefit from access to stipends, mentoring and coaching from experienced teachers and teacher educators, and membership in a nationwide community of more than 300 teachers who are committed to improving education.

KSTF Executive Director and CEO Nicole Gillespie commented, “The selection of new Teaching Fellows is one of the most exciting times of the year at KSTF. Our staff is looking forward to supporting our 2017 Cohort of Teaching Fellows as they grow into outstanding teachers who will lead from the classroom.”

“As a new teacher, I understand that I have a lot to learn. Teaching is a complex profession and I think that the best way to improve is by getting feedback and advice from other teachers,” said 2017 Knowles Teaching Fellow Mason Rocca. “The Knowles network is rich with experienced, talented, and motivated teachers. Having this community, along with the resources KSTF provides to support my development at this crucial time in my career, will help give me the direction and guidance I need to grow as a teacher.”
